'This weekend is not about heroics'

Karun Chandhok talks exclusively to ESPNF1 about his Lotus debut at the German Grand Prix

What is your reaction to getting a chance to race at the German GP?
It's a big thing from Tony [Fernandes] to have given me a chance to race this weekend. All credit to him and Team Lotus which has been promoting Asian talent, be it drivers or technicians. I have driven the car in practice previously, now I am really excited and looking forward to starting on the grid this Sunday.

How has your experience with Team Lotus been?
I am extremely happy to be a part of this team. It has been an interesting experience, having participated in practice sessions and simulator programmes. One of the reasons I joined Team Lotus was because of its distinct Asian character (owners, technicians) and its aim of providing opportunity to Asian talent which otherwise lacks experience at this level.

Will you be racing at the Indian GP?
Racing in the German GP is a one-off chance. I am fully concentrated on doing well this weekend and not thinking too far ahead.

Would you love to race at the inaugural Indian GP?
Of course, I would.

What can we expect from you this weekend?
This weekend is not about heroics. I have never driven the car in a full race. I have never had a feel of the Pirelli dry tyres and the DRS. This is going to be a learning experience. I will be giving my best during the weekend.

How important is it for motorsport in India that you would be racing for Team Lotus?
It's important that both Narain [Karthikeyan] and I remain a part of Formula One. With the exception of Ferrari, fans connect with the individual drivers, be it Sebastien Vettel or Michael Schumacher. Drivers are the faces of the sport and considering that India would be hosting its first F1 race this year, it's important that there are two Indian drivers in F1.

Any targets for 2012?
To have a full racing seat for next year. I would be happy if I get a chance to do so with Team Lotus.
