Mark Webber says "the tyres are still the most important thing" in Formula One after practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Red Bull's impressive one-lap pace in Australia was negated by the Pirelli tyres in the race with Sebastian Vettel dropping from first to third and Webber from second to sixth. After Friday's afternoon practice session saw the teams having to switch to intermediates as rain fell, there was a crossover point when the slicks were still working and Webber joked that was the best conditions for them.

"The slicks went alright in those conditions - it's probably the only conditions they work in to be honest - when it rains on slicks they're a chance," Webber said.

"The crossover point looks quite interesting. The tyres are still the most important thing at the moment - it's all about those! It's pretty warm in the car, but if I'm warm, then so is everyone else and in general it's not as bad as previous years."

Webber added that Red Bull had learnt a lot on Friday but that it would not necessarily be an indication of how well it can do in the race.

"Plenty, we'll go through it tonight. These Friday pressers are a little bit of a joke really because we try to give you a feeling but it'll all change on Sunday anyway. We'll try and get what we can out of it, it was a pretty smooth run for us to be honest and we need to improve; keep finding pace."
