Sebastian Vettel admitted he was pushing too hard when he spun out of the second practice session at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

During his first hot lap on the medium tyres, Vettel lost the rear of his Ferrari on entry to Turn 11 and ended up just short of the gravel trap on the outside of the corner. It meant he ruined his shot at a quick lap on the faster compound, but he said he was simply trying to push the limits.

"I didn't finish my lap … I pushed a little bit too hard," he said. "We are here to try, I tried and it went a little bit wrong. The spin was nothing to do with bad luck, it's to do with me pushing a little bit too much thinking I could make it stick and I couldn't. So I guess if you choose a day you choose today."

Vettel said it was too early to tell how far Mercedes was ahead, but thinks both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have more pace than they showed on Friday.

"I think it's difficult to say where we are compared to Mercedes, they didn't have a clean day. That's not the most important thing now, that's to look after ourselves.

"We'll see. I think it will be close between us and Williams. Probably Red Bull as well and the Toro Rossos. It's difficult to say, it's a mixed bag. But at the front Mercedes is strong."
