Jenson Button described the new parts he will be testing for McLaren during Friday practice for the Canadian Grand Prix as "exciting".

McLaren has struggled so far this season, with Button's fifth place in China its best result in the opening six races. However, Button feels the team didn't extract the maximum potential from its Monaco race weekend and thinks it can be more competitive in Canada if the new parts live up to expectations.

"For us Monaco's outright result wasn't great but in terms of our improvement and performance I think it was relatively good," Button said. "We've got some new parts on the car here to test - which is exciting - and hopefully they'll give us what we expect. It still doesn't mean we'll be fighting for a win, in dry conditions anyway. I think if it's mixed we've got to be ready for every scenario and I think we can do well in that situation."

While Button feels McLaren won't be affected by the bumpy surface in Montreal he says the weather will make it a difficult weekend regardless.

"Our ride has got better; in Monaco we proved that really because we didn't expect to be as competitive as we were in Monaco. It has improved and here it's not too bad, I think the difficulty here is going to be with the conditions knowing what the tyres are going to do in the race but also downforce levels are going to be tricky to really understand."
