McLaren tests 2014 parts at Silverstone

McLaren tested a mixture of 2013 and 2014 parts at the Young Driver Test at Silverstone as Oliver Turvey took to the wheel for the second day.

At the British Grand Prix McLaren said its focus is now on 2014 after a disappointing start to the season that sees it lying sixth in the constructors' standings heading towards the mid-point at Hungary. The team has opted to run three of its test drivers at this week's test in the knowledge that running race drivers would restrict its programme to focusing on tyre testing for Pirelli and not performance testing on the car.

Turvey, one of the team's test and simulator drivers, was at the wheel on Thursday and said some of his work had been aimed at next year's car.

"It was a bit of a mixture to be honest," he said. "We were working on things that can be run on this year's car for the rest of the season but also things for 2014 to help our understanding and learning.

"We tried a lot of different aero parts and mechanical, so we started the morning working on aero and then tried some different options on that. In the afternoon it was more on the mechanical side of the car so we really covered everything I think. We had a lot of different set-up changes so it's been a busy day and I feel like I've been in the car all day."

Although McLaren had free rein on set-up changes, Turvey said the focus had been on gathering data on new parts.

"Most of our work was not on optimising the car, most of it was on development to help our understanding and learning for Hungary, the rest of the season and also 2014 to make sure we're in a competitive place."
