McLaren has ended the penultimate day of testing prematurely due to an oil leak after recording just 39 laps at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Kevin Magnussen took the wheel on Saturday in place of Fernando Alonso, who is sitting out the final pre-season test on advice of doctors after his serious crash on the final day of the second test. McLaren came into the day after Jenson Button clocked its most successful day of testing so far on Friday with 101 laps to his name.

Magnussen seemed to be on course to complete good mileage in the morning but emerged for just one lap after lunch. Just under two hours from the end of the session McLaren confirmed it had cut its day short due to an oil leak Magnussen suffered on his return to the pit lane just after lunch.

His headline time, a 1:25.225, was set on the soft tyre. Button is due to take over testing duties again on Sunday.

It was Magnussen's first taste of the MP4-30 and he tweeted his excitement about the car at McLaren's disposal.
