Mercedes has categorically denied that it is looking to replace Michael Schumacher in 2011.

Schumacher has always maintained he intends to stay in Formula One next year but after a poor run of results and criticism from F1 personalities, there has been growing speculation he might retire again at the end of 2010. However, Mercedes competition director Norbert Haug insists that his driver has no plans to leave and is confident he will start winning when the team provides him with a more competitive car.

When asked if a different driver will be alongside Nico Rosberg next year, Haug told the DPA news agency: "Definitely not. As soon as we have a winning car then he will look for victories, just like Nico Rosberg will."

He went on to defend Schumacher's season so far.

"Michael finished in fourth place twice in the last six grands prix," Haug said. "That's not much for Schumacher or Mercedes standards but it's a lot when you consider what was possible in these races."

He added that the seven-time world champion should not be ashamed to be 54 points behind Rosberg in the drivers' standings.

"Nico is one of the best around," he said. "Who knows, he could even be the best of them all.

"We will make it to the very top. We know what it takes to win races; we've done it before and we'll do it again."
