Conway and Ericsson to test for Mercedes GP

Former Honda development driver Mike Conway and Japanese Formula 3 champion Marcus Ericsson will drive for Mercedes GP at the upcoming young drivers' test in Jerez.

A wealth of new talent has been confirmed for the test, at which teams are only permitted to use drivers who have competed in less than three grand prix. The pair will be the first to drive for the full Mercedes team since the marque pulled out of F1 as a constructor in 1955.

Briton Conway, who currently races in IndyCar in the USA, has connections with the team, having tested with it in 2008 when it was under Honda ownership. He also competed in GP2 in 2006, 2007 and 2008, winning the Monaco sprint race in his final year in the series. He is expected to drive on all three days of the test over December 1-3.

Ericsson's opportunity comes on the back of successful campaigns in Formula 3 this year, both in Japan and the UK. He also qualified on pole for the recent F3 Macau Grand Prix, going on to finish fourth. The Swedish driver is currently competing in GP2 Asia, having driven in the support race for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Conway and Ericsson were among the many drivers listed on the testing intinerary issued by the Jerez circuit. The list did not show any McLaren drivers but Gary Paffett is expected to drive for the team.
