More to be gained from new exhaust - Brawn
Mercedes is confident there is more to come from the new exhaust and upgrade package it ran at Silverstone last weekend.
At the British Grand Prix Mercedes ditched its side-exiting exhaust layout for a system similar to the ones used by Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari. It also brought a number of updates to the car that appeared to help with tyre wear, an issue that had been hampering the car's race pace.
But with limited dry running at Silverstone the team could not test the updates as much as it had hoped and team principal Ross Brawn is expecting to extract even more performance at next weekend's German Grand Prix.
"Our car showed positive signs of improvement with the new upgrade package and exhaust system in Silverstone, and we have been working hard since then to further enhance our understanding of its performance capabilities," he said. "We are hopeful of continuing this progression and putting on a good performance next weekend, giving our drivers the opportunity to show what they can do in front of their own supporters."
Michael Schumacher said the upturn in performance at Silverstone, which saw him score points despite a stop-go penalty, was further motivation for the team.
"This season has been a difficult one for performance predictions so far; however I can predict one thing for sure: the extra boost we are receiving will be transformed into extra motivation," he said. "We saw some improvements over the Silverstone weekend with our new exhaust system, along with improvements to how we work with the tyres, so we go to the next race weekend with a good feeling added to our fighting spirit."
