Sam Bird said that he was "very happy" with his performance for Mercedes in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi after setting the third fastest time of the week.

Bird was driving the W02 for all three days of the test, and set the second fastest time in the final session behind Jean-Eric Vergne's Red Bull, with only Jules Bianchi in the Ferrari going quicker at any point in the week. Speaking to ESPNF1 Bird said that he couldn't read too much in to the times compared to other drivers, but that knowing his own programme he was pleased with his results.

"I was very happy with my performance," Bird said. "I don't think I could have got anything else out of the car. If you look at the data it looks quite good on me, however you don't know what other people are running - what mixtures, what modes, what tyres, what fuel levels - I know what I was running and I'm happy with what I did."

Team principal Ross Brawn agreed that Bird's performance had been impressive, saying that he had done "extremely well".

"We have had a very good test in Abu Dhabi this week, and my compliments to Sam and the team at the Yas Marina Circuit for their efforts over the three days," Brawn said. "The test has enabled us to make a good start to our 2012 preparations, and provided a wealth of data for our engineers to study. Sam has performed extremely well this week, providing consistency and accuracy in both his driving and feedback, and our engineers in Abu Dhabi have been very impressed with his contribution."
