Mo Farah set a new British road record of 27 minutes and 44 seconds to win the Bupa London 10,000m race.

The defending champion outsprinted Kenya's world record holder Micah Kogo to clinch victory by five seconds, while Farah's US-based compatriot Chris Thompson finished third.

Farah and Kogo set the pace from the off and ditched the pack at the midway point, breaking clear of Thompson and another Kenyan Gordon Muhugu, who finished fourth. Kogo could not stick with the Newham and Essex Beagle athlete and watched on as Farah charged away down the finishing stretch.

"I knew I was in great shape coming into the race and I was confident," Farah said. "My aim was to come out and run hard and if the pace was good just to go with it.

"I love London and I get loads of support - and with 200m to go I just went 'boom'. I'm now excited and looking forward to the European 10k next weekend."

Farah's record was six seconds quicker than his previous best, set in London at the same event last year.
