Former Olympic champion Justin Gatlin believes Britain's Dwain Chambers should be allowed to compete at London 2012.

Chambers surrendered his world indoor 60m title to Gatlin at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Turkey on Saturday, but while the American will now turn his focus to preparing for this summer's Olympics, Chambers faces an uncertain season.

On Monday the Court of Arbitration for Sport will begin a hearing into a dispute between the World Anti-Doping Agency and the British Olympic Assocation over the validity of a by-law that imposes a lifetime ban on convicted drugs cheats.

Should the BOA appeal be unsuccessful, Chambers, who served a two-year ban for using the banned steroid tetrahydrogestrinone in 2003, will be free to attempt qualification for Team GB.

Gatlin himself served a four-year ban after testing positive for exessive testosterone in 2006, but unlike Chambers is not subject to an Olympic ban.

"Dwain has proven himself as a God-given talent and a good runner and having him on the line in the Olympics would make a great show," Gatlin said.

Chambers insists he has learnt from his mistakes and now faces a nervous wait to learn if he will be part of an Olympics on home soil.

"We have both made mistakes and we have been blessed with the opportunity to get back," Chambers said. "We are trying to get back to the true essence of sport: now and that is running.

"I am living proof that you can make mistakes and get yourself back on the straight and narrow. Every time I get the opportunity to compete for my country it is an honour, and I threw that away. That vision scared me, so I never ever want throw that away again.

"The more we keep talking about the past the more we are going to keep the sport in a bad light. It is important that we start looking forward and hopefully we can look forward to a fantastic Olympic Games."
