Idowu racing the clock to be fully fit for London 2012

Phillips Idowu expects to compete at London 2012, but he admits "every day counts" towards making sure he is in the right position to challenge for a gold medal.

Idowu, who has won triple-jump gold at world, European and Commonwealth level, is preparing for an assault on the one medal that would mean more than any other. The Olympic Games are to take place in his backyard, and 33-year-old is among the favourites to win the triple-jump competition.

A silver medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Idowu plans to go one better in London. However, he is fortunate that his competition begins towards the end of the Games, having been forced to pull out of the recent London Grand Prix amid reports of fitness concerns.

"I'm working really hard, I've got about 18 days until I'm competing in the final. Every day counts," Idowu told Sky Sports News.

"I had a little jog just then and I'm happy. I've got a few more things to do to make sure I'm in tip-top shape before I compete at the Games, but right now it's all about the people."

Idowu carried the Olympic flame on Saturday, and he was greeted by thousands of cheering fans. That support, says Idowu, could be the tipping factor in helping Great Britain to win gold medals.

"Home advantage is key, we have that on our side," he said. "Everyone wants to win an Olympic medal, we've all worked really hard to be prepared."
