BOA: Idowu winning fitness battle

Phillips Idowu is winning his fitness race for London 2012, according to the British Olympic Association, which claims the triple jumper is "making good progress".

There were growing fears Idowu may have to pull out of his home Games after he chose, last week, not to travel for a warm-weather training camp in Portugal in order to continue treatment on a nerve problem affecting his hip and back.

The 33-year-old, who won silver in Beijing four years ago, has only competed three times this year, with his most recent outing in a low-key meeting in Oregon on June 1, when he sat out the rest of the competition after three jumps.

The relationship between the athlete and the BOA had appeared to sour when the governing body made public its request for Idowu's medical records to further understand the details of his injury.

However, the BOA stated on Thursday it would "ensure he has the support he needs in his treatment", and it has now emerged Idowu is on track to be fit for his tilt at Olympic gold on August 7.

"Phillips is making good progress and we expect him to compete," British Olympic Association chef de mission Andy Hunt said.
