Romain Grosjean said Lotus' Q1 qualifying strategy paid off at the Singapore Grand Prix after grabbing third on the grid in Q3.

Grosjean gambled on using medium tyres to make it out of Q1, saving him two sets of fresh super-soft tyres when he arrived in Q3. The Red Bull drivers were the only others confident enough to apply the same strategy but Grosjean said his team made the right call.

"We knew that after the final practice session we might get a little bit caught by the night coming on and at the start of Q1 we were not quite as quick as we were expecting," he said. "Nevertheless the team did a good decision about the strategy and the cut off and everything so then we had two attempts in Q3 and it's good to be at the front on the grid at this grand prix."

Grosjean said his third place grid position was particularly satisfying after he missed out on running time in the Friday practice sessions.

"I think the car has been okay today and if you look at how many laps we did in the whole weekend then P3 in qualifying is not too bad."
