Jenson Button said there were positives and negatives to be taken from McLaren's upgrades at the Spanish Grand Prix, but is not expecting his team to make a leap up the standings.

After a difficult start to the year, McLaren brought a comprehensive upgrade to the MP4-28 during Friday practice but still struggled to trouble the top ten. Button said he hoped there was more to come but admitted there had been unforeseen issues with some aspects of the new parts.

"There are some positives to the balance of the car and there are some negatives," he said. "The problem in this sport is that you've got to move forward in every race. We have moved forward but I think everybody has.

"We haven't had the new front wing on the car and we are not sure we will this weekend. There's a lot of data to go through and things to change to see what's working and what is affecting our balance. There are some positives with the balance but there are areas we need to improve on and they are areas I didn't think we'd have to [work on]."

He added: "I think you'll see four teams that are very competitive at the front and I don't think we'll be one of them. We should be just behind."

Button said one positive the team had taken away from the first two practice sessions is a closer correlation between data from the wind tunnel and the track.

"There's a much better correlation with the car and the wind tunnel from now on," he said. "I think it's a good correlation which is positive for the future. We still need more and we always want more performance, so that's what we are working very hard to do."
