Mark Webber says Red Bull knew it had plenty in hand ahead of qualifying after he took pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Webber ended team-mate Sebastian Vettel's run of qualifying first for every race so far this season as he set a time that was a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton's third-placed McLaren. Webber said that he had known it was likely to be an inter-team battle for pole position following strong performances in all three practice sessions.
"It was a good session," Webber said. "I think it was pretty clear going in to qualifying that we might have had a bit of a margin so it was going to be probably down to Seb and I maybe for the front row, without being arrogant but it just looked like that - you never can underestimate these guys but we thought we were probably going to battle for a pole between ourselves."
Webber said he had managed to get a clean lap and was looking at the electronic leaderboard on the pit straight to see if he had beaten Vettel.
"We got through [the first session] on the first set of hards so that was nice to do that, and some other people did as well. And then coming to the crucial part of qualifying obviously was just getting the lap right for Q3, so that lap was pretty good. I was just obviously praying that my number went above number one when I crossed the gantry over the start finish line and it did. So it was a nice lap, it was a good battle with Seb and today was my day."
Webber also said he was unaware what time Vettel had done before setting his own, and that he was focussing on his own performance rather than that of his team-mate.
"I don't have a clue what time Sebastian does, obviously you don't know if he makes a mistake or if he does a phenomenal lap or whatever, you've just got to take control of yourself and get the job done."
