The newly-unveiled Super Rugby franchise Melbourne Rebels have named Brian Waldron as their chief executive.

Waldron has been lured away from NRL side Melbourne Storm after a six-year stint in the 13-man code and will begin his new job before March 1. He is the first appointment in the Rebels' recruitment drive, with a head coach and playing staff yet to be confirmed ahead of their entry into the expanded Super 15 in 2011.

"Brian's talents as an organisational leader and his ability to nurture and operate successful sporting entities at the highest level are well evidenced," Rebels chairman Harold Mitchell said. "He is thoroughly committed to achieving success with the Rebels and to developing a team that embodies leadership and integrity both on and off the field.

"His appointment is a vital step toward ensuring our club makes an outstanding permanent contribution to Melbourne's sporting culture."

Waldron has also served as chief executive of St. Kilda in the AFL and also as general manager at Richmond Football Club and is excited by the chance to build a franchise from scratch.

"The role with Melbourne Rebels is a rare opportunity to develop a successful high level sporting team from the ground up," he said. "The Rebels will represent Melbourne in the international arena and I am looking forward to working with Harold Mitchell and his team to build a club of which all Victorians and Australian rugby supporters will be proud."
