Defending champion Murray dumped out in Montreal

Andy Murray's US Open preparations suffered a major setback when he was dumped out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The fourth seed, who has not played a tournament since his semi-final defeat to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, showed signs of rust as he fell 6-3 6-1 to the big-serving South African Kevin Anderson.

Murray struggled to regain his form following a break after the Australian Open earlier in the season, and he had difficulties with the South African's serve-and-volley tactics.

While Anderson had the benefit of a first-round match, it was Murray's first match since the Davis Cup in July after being handed a bye into the second round. The Scot was left reeling when the world No. 35 grabbed an early break.

That break proved decisive as Murray failed to find a way back into the set, and he left himself with a mountain to climb after dropping his opening service game in the second. The British No. 1 had a chance to break back, but Anderson held on before streaking away to victory.

Murray is the two-time defending champion in Montreal, and will have hoped to get a good run of form together in Canada ahead of the final major of the year, which begins at the end of August.
