Rafael Nadal suffered a shock defeat in his return to the court, going down in a marathon three-set match to big-serving Ivan Dodig 1-6 7-6(5) 7-6(5) in the second round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The match lasted more than three hours, but it appeared to be nothing more than a routine win for the world No. 2 early on as he took the first set with ease. However, Dodig's thunderous serve kicked into gear thereafter, as the Croatian fired down 19 aces to overpower Nadal.

The pair traded breaks of serve throughout the deciding set, before Dodig won a crucial mini-break at 6-5 in the tiebreaker to seal the dramatic victory. It was Nadal's first match since his Wimbledon final loss and leaves the Spaniard struggling to gather both form and match practice in the lead-up to the US Open, which is now less than three weeks away.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer shrugged off the challenge of a determined Vasek Pospisil to set up a rematch with his Wimbledon conqueror Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. After celebrating his 30th birthday on Monday, Federer showed no signs of slowing down as he wrapped up a 7-5 6-3 win over the home favourite at the Uniprix Stadium, but he was made to work hard for the win.

The world No. 155 frustrated Federer in the first set as the 16-time grand slam champion struggled to find a breakthrough. But just as the opener looked to be heading for a tiebreak, Federer's patience paid off as he snatched the set.

Pospisil battled valiantly, but Federer eased through his service games as he set up a third-round clash with No. 13 seed Tsonga, who served 15 aces as he beat Australian teenager Bernard Tomic 6-3 7-6(1). Federer will have the chance to avenge his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat, when Tsonga memorably came from two sets down to beat the six-time champion at the All England Club in June.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic recovered from a shaky start to beat Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets. The Wimbledon champion, who is playing his first tournament as world No. 1, found himself 4-1 down in the opening set, but bounced back to claim a 7-5 6-1 win to book a third-round clash with Marin Cilic, who upset No. 16 seed Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 6-4.

Gael Monfils sealed his place in the third round with a 6-2 7-6(5) win over Alex Bogomolov Jr, while his compatriot Richard Gasquet also progressed with a 6-1 6-4 win over Thomaz Bellucci.

Tomas Berdych had to battle from a set down to beat Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 4-6 6-2 6-3, while there were also wins for Nicolas Almagro and Stanislas Wawrinka.
