Rain delay forces Djokovic to wait

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will have to wait until Wednesday to get his Rogers Cup campaign underway as rain forced an abrupt halt to play in Montreal.

Djokovic is due to take on Nikolay Davydenko in the second round of the tournament after the top seed was given a bye in the opening round. Tuesday's delay will result in a heavy schedule on Wednesday, with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal among a host of players already set to take to the court.

American John Isner was leading Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 1-2 when the heavens opened, while Radek Stepanek and Feliciano Lopez were locked at one set all. Spain's Fernando Verdasco dropped the first set against Tobias Kamke, but recovered before play was stopped to leave the score 5-7 6-3 2-2.

Earlier matches did reach a conclusion before the inclement weather struck, however, with No. 10 seed Richard Gasquet needing little more than an hour to defeat Florian Mayer. The Frenchman saved all five break points he faced en route to a comfortable 6-3 6-2 triumph.

Twelfth seed Viktor Troicki was pushed to three sets by American Michael Yani. The Serbian eventually showed his class, earning a hard-fought 2-6 6-3 6-1 win.

Janko Tipsarevic and Sergiy Stakhovski were among the other opening round winners on Tuesday, while Michael Llodra provided the biggest upset in toppling No. 11 seed Mikhail Youzhny 3-6 6-3 7-6(4).
