Murray feels he is peaking at best possible time

Andy Murray believes the US Open is his best chance to win a grand slam, and is more confident than he ever has been that is in the right shape to claim victory at Flushing Meadows this year.

Murray believes the two hard court grand slam events - the US Open and Australian Open - are most suited to his style of play, as perhaps evidenced by the fact all three of his final appearances to date have come at the two tournaments. But the Scot has not made the final in New York since 2008, although he hopes that will change this time around.

"I think the Australian Open and the US Open [are my best chances]," Murray told the BBC. "The hard courts have always been my best surface, the surface where I feel most comfortable, so definitely between these two it's my best opportunity.

"The last two years here I've not played well but I really want to change that now."

Unlike in previous years, Murray revealed that he has tailored his training and preparation to try and ensure he is at his best four times each year.

"I've been trying to make sure that I peak for the slams," he said. "It's not something I've managed to do in the past."

The 23-year-old seems to feel he has made some progress in that regard, however, after clinching victory at the Western & Southern Open. Unlike in seasons past, Murray believes he is still getting better over the closing weeks of the current season.

"Cincinnati was almost the perfect week for me, because I managed to win the tournament while still feeling there was more to come, so it was good build-up for the US Open," he said. "In previous years, I've gone in feeling like I was recovering and almost feeling like I'd already played my best tennis. Hopefully this year can be different.

"I want to finish off the year with a grand slam win. I know it will be difficult, but I feel like I can do it."
