- US Open, Day Two
Radwanska mauls Bratchikova
Agnieszka Radwanska announced herself on the US Open with a demolition of Nina Bratchikova.
The No. 2 seed made the breakthrough at the highest level at Wimbledon this year, making it to the final before falling to Serena Williams, and her opening effort at Flushing Meadows, a 6-1 6-1 win, suggested she is ready to go a step further.
Bratchikova appeared unnerved by taking to the big stage on Arthur Ashe, as she made a string of unforced errors - 18 in all - in the opening set.
After surrendering the opening set in 34 minutes, Bratchikova settled the nerves with a break of the Radwanska serve at the start of the second.
The loss of a service game stung Radwanska into action and she ran through six games on the spin to book her place in the second round - with her display suggesting the shoulder injury that has been causing concern is manageable.
Radwanka's sister Ursula failed to join her higher-ranked sibling in the second round after falling 6-1 6-1 to Roberta Vinci.
Serbian No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic made a fine start to her campaign, beating Elina Svitolina. Ivanovic struggled with her first serve in the opening set, her percentage was down at 32%, but she was impressive from the ground and had too much firepower in her 6-3 6-2 win.
At 41, Kimiko Date-Krumm may not have too many US Open appearances left and she was toppled at the first hurdle - losing to Sofia Arvidsson who will face Ivanovic in round two.
The No. 10 seed Sara Errani claimed a three-set win over Garbine Muguruza and she will play Vera Dushevina in round two following the latter's 6-0 6-3 win over Nastassja Burnett.
Dominika Cibukova lost the first set to Johanna Larsson, but it stung her into action as she dropped only two more games to win 6-7(5) 6-2 6-0. The No. 13 seed will meet Bojana Jovanovski in round two following her win over Mona Barthel.
