Robson makes solid start in Guangzhou

Laura Robson's steady rise through the WTA rankings looks set to continue after a confident start to the Guangzhou International on Monday.
Robson, still only 18 years of age, has enjoyed something of a breakthrough year on the WTA Tour, smashing into the world's top 100 players. Her recent run to the fourth round of the US Open has her ranked No. 74, and she is eyeing the top 50.
Her first-round match at the Guangzhou International had her paired with world No. 111 Maria Teresa Torro-Flor, a 20-year-old Spaniard with 10 career ITF singles titles to her name.
Robson controlled the contest and was already well on her way to victory in the match as she moved to a 6-2 3-1 lead. However, she was denied the chance to close out the match by Torro's retirement due to injury, which gave Robson a premature pass to the next round.
She will now face the winner of Jie Zheng v Yung-Jan Chan.
