Laura Robson's AEGON Classic campaign came to a halt with a 7-5 6-4 defeat to Yanina Wickmayer.

Robson beat Stefanie Voegele in the first round in Edgbaston to set up a clash with Wickmayer, but the challenge of taking on the No. 3 seed proved a bridge too far for the British teenager.

Wickmayer is on the way back up the ladder after serving a suspension and she was severe on the Robson second serve. The 16-year-old won just 41% of points on her second serve, which resulted in Wickmayer breaking on three occasions.

Robson is not overawed by taking on the big names and fought hard throughout, but she failed to get to grips with Wickmayer in the second set and bowed out in an hour and 27 minutes.

Wickmayer was back in action later in the day - she defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn in the third round - as the organisers play catch-up at the rain-affected tournament.

Anne Keothavong revealed this week that she is "desperate" to get past the second round at Wimbledon for the first time, but she could not progress past that stage in Birmingham. Top seed Na Li severed her participation in the tournament by romping to a 6-2 6-4 win in a shade over an hour.

Maria Sharapova eased into the fourth round round by cruising past Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3 6-1, while tenth seed Magdalena Rybarikova was sent out of the tournament by Sesil Karatantcheva.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Alison Riske and Aravane Rezai.
