Novak Djokovic could not hide his elation at winning a 'special event' after clinching the Australian Open crown with a straight sets victory over Andy Murray.

Djokovic, who also won the tournament in 2008, simply had too much for his beleaguered opponent, capitalising on a timely late break in the first set to propel himself to a 6-4 6-2 6-3 triumph.

In his victory speech after being presented with the Norman Brookes trophy, he was quick to thank all those that had helped him in his career.

"It truly is a special event. It is truly a joy to play here," Djokovic said. "I dedicate this title to my family, my brothers, my girl Jelena, back home my people that have been with me for so many years. It has been a tough period for us in Serbia, and we are trying every day to present our country in the best possible way, so hopefully this will help."

Djokovic was self-effacing in victory, praising Murray's efforts over the last two weeks and assuring the Scot that he would get another chance at a grand slam victory.

"I want to congratulate Andy for a great two weeks," he said. "He has played finals here in the last three years. We've known each other for such a long time and it was difficult to face you tonight. It was a tough one tonight, but hopefully you will get another chance to win grand slams and I'm sure with your talent you will."

The 23-year-old, who beat Roger Federer in the semi-finals, then praised his coaching team for all their efforts - crediting them for much of his success.

"Secondly, to my team I would like to say that I have the best team, I love you guys," the Serbian added. "It is an individual sport and it all seems to come down to individual effort but backstage, the people that are in your team are making you feel comfortable and able to play your best on the court are important - so thank you guys."

While disappointed with his performance on the night, Murray - who has now failed to win a set in all three of his grand slam final appearances - paid tribute to Djokovic and pledged to work hard to avenge the defeat in the future.

"I'll try and keep it together this time," Murray said, a reference to last year where he broke down in tears following defeat in the final to Roger Federer. "Congratulations to Novak. I would also like to thank my team over there, we've put in a lot of hard work together. Didn't quite do it this time but hopefully I'll come back and have more chances in the future."
