Wozniacki dumped out by Goerges

Julia Goerges stunned world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki for the second time in less than a fortnight to send the top seed crashing out of the Madrid Open.
The world No. 27, who upset the Dane to claim the title in Stuttgart, proved her fairytale win was no fluke as she battled to a 6-4 1-6 6-3 victory.
Despite an erratic first serve, Goerges secured two breaks to take the opening set, but was soon pegged back by Wozniacki, who bounced back in emphatic fashion.
In the decisive third set, Goerges was clearly fatigued, but she hung on valiantly, and claimed a late break before holding to love to seal the match. It was a hard-earned victory for the German, who hit 36 winners to Wozniacki's 11.
Goerges will now meet Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals after the Russian upset fifth seed Sam Stosur 7-6(4) 6-3.
With Wozniacki out, Victoria Azarenka is the highest-placed player left in the top half of the draw, and she will fancy her chances in Madrid after ripping past home favourite Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-0 6-3.
The Spaniard was in severe danger of a double bagel when she found herself 3-0 down in the second set, but managed to avoid the whitewash with two breaks of serve, although she never looked likely to trouble the fourth seed. Azarenka is yet to be troubled at the Caja Magica, having dropped just five games in her opening three matches. She now moves on to play Lucie Safarova, who beat Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3 6-3.
Sixth seed Na Li did not have quite such an easy time of things as she was forced to battle from a set down to beat the in-form Italian Roberta Vinci 2-6 6-2 6-1.
There was another shcok in the bottom half of the draw, as third seed Francesca Schiavone was dumped out at the hands of Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
The American came into the match clearly meaning business, and avoided errors on her serve to give her opponent just two break point attempts - none of which were taken.
Schiavone was similarly miserly in the first set, forcing a tie-break that Mattek-Sands only narrowly edged, before giving up a break in the second that enabled her opponent to close out a tight 7-6(5) 6-3 triumph.
