Jean-Eric Vergne says it will take time to understand why Red Bull overlooked him for Sebastian Vettel's vacant seat by promoting rookie Daniil Kvyat.

Vergne was passed over for Daniel Ricciardo last year in the wake of Mark Webber's retirement, and has since lost his 2015 seat to Max Verstappen. While Vergne joined Toro Rosso in 2012, team-mate Kvyat is still in his rookie season and has just to 14 races to his name as of Saturday - the day Red Bull's stunning announcement was made.

Kvyat's elevation means Vergne's F1 future is still up in the air and in the wake of the announcement the 24-year-old admitted he was struggling to get his head around it.

"That's not a question you should ask me," Vergne said when asked about his future. "I have absolutely no idea, I have no expectation right now - I don't know. I don't have anything to say about the situation at the moment, I need a little bit of time to realise it and as well to understand the decision."

Despite his bafflement at what has transpired at Red Bull, Vergne was at least able to poke fun at his situation when asked his plans for next year: "Maybe I will do the Tour de France in cycling!"
