Vergne buoyed by Toro Rosso speculation
Jean-Eric Vergne says he is encouraged by reports suggesting Toro Rosso will retain his services for 2015 and thinks the last few races have given him the chance to showcase his true potential.
Vergne's future at Toro Rosso has been a doubt all season; first it was announced he was being replaced by Max Verstappen, before Daniil Kvyat was promoted to Red Bull to take Sebastian Vettel's 2015 seat. Kvyat's elevation upset Vergne but it now leaves the seat alongside Verstappen available next season, with the teenage sensation recently admitting he would like to partner the Frenchman.
When asked about his future, with several French media outlets reporting he will stay at Toro Rosso, Vergne said: "There have been some good words from many people, especially from France. It will be a good thing to stay with this team, I really believe in it and I think this year we got a lot stronger and hopefully next year we will be on the same train. I believe we can be in a better position next year and hopefully we can continue that. But you never know and I don't know much more than that."
Since the Verstappen news was announced Vergne has turned in several impressive displays, including aggressive drives in Singapore and Austin. But Vergne says he has not changed his attitude behind the wheel because of the current situation.
"Definitely not anger," he it was put to him that was a motivating factor in his recent drives. "I believe that I've done many races like this in the past but unfortunately at the beginning of the year I had a lot of DNFs and obviously when you don't finish the race, people don't remember what you were up to. That's a little bit of a shame. I haven't changed anything; I've driven with a lot of patience. I've drove with a lot of patience and I love racing, that's what I do best. It doesn't matter what I do next year, I will continue to give 100% and have the most fun as possible."
