Jaime Alguersuari has backed his Toro Rosso team-mate Sebastien Buemi to hold onto his race drive over Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo impressed at the recent young driver test in Abu Dhabi, where he lapped the Red Bull RB6 faster than world champion Sebastian Vettel's pole position time the previous weekend. He is the leading junior Red Bull driver and has been earmarked for a future in F1 by Helmut Marko, most likely starting at Toro Rosso.

When asked what the driver line-up will be next year, Alguersuari told Dario AS: "I don't know what will happen. What I can say is that if my team-mate [Buemi] had driven a Red Bull, he would do better than Ricciardo. Without a doubt."

Meanwhile, Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has heaped praise on Alguersuari, indicating that the Spaniard will hold onto his race drive.

"Jaime has this year learned to set up and develop and drive the car," he told El Mundo Deportivo. "Now I'm looking forward to next season, when we will have a much more mature driver who is constantly improving."

Alguersuari replied: "I'm very proud of what he said because I think I have improved this year and I intend to keep going that way."
