There may be no official confirmation from the UFC, but it seems the winner of this weekend's lightweight clash between Ben Henderson and Clay Guida will book a ticket to Japan to fight Frankie Edgar.

Henderson and Guida square off in a No. 1 contender clash in Anaheim, in the co-main event to Cain Velasquez's heavyweight title defence against Junior Dos Santos.

Usually the scenario would be straight-forward: The winner gets to meet 155lb champion Edgar next year. However, the prospect of Strikeforce king Gil Melendez switching to the UFC muddies the waters somewhat.

Nevertheless, it does now appear Henderson or Guida will be next for Edgar, who recently defeated Gray Maynard. Multiple reports from respected MMA websites in the States, including MMA Junkie, claim Edgar is nailed to the Japan card on February 26.

And it seems only a poor performance by Henderson and Guida in Saturday's fight could derail plans for a 2012 lightweight title booking.
