Georges St-Pierre's camp have revealed the UFC welterweight champion's knee surgery was a success on Tuesday.

St-Pierre is expected to be out for around 10 months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. The injury ruled him out of a UFC 143 title defence against Nick Diaz.

The welterweight champion relies heavily on explosive power, particularly generated through his legs, so it is vital he takes no shortcuts with his knee surgery.

On Tuesday the operation was performed in Los Angeles at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, and the champion remains on course to return in 2012. His recovery period could now be anything between six and 10 months.

"It went great," coach Firas Zahabi wrote in a text message to MMA Fighting. "The doctor said it could not have gone better."
