In the week of a hugely significant event for the UFC's welterweight division, a new matchup has been announced for the 170lb weight class as Jon Fitch gets set to meet Demian Maia.

The UFC descends on Montreal this weekend for the welterweight title bout of Georges St-Pierre v Carlos Condit. Acting as the co-main event, Johny Hendricks takes on Martin Kampmann in a top contender fight.

Now UFC officials have announced the clash of Fitch and Maia for UFC 156, which takes place on Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas.

The February 2 card already features Jose Aldo v Frankie Edgar, as well as Rashad Evans v Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Reports suggest Alistair Overeem will also meet Antonio Silva.

Maia is currently making waves after dropping into the welterweight ocean, recently beating Rick Story in dominant fashion. Fitch is also heading in the right direction after beating the highly rated Erick Silva.

Silva himself expects to feature on the Mandalay Bay card, although an opponent is yet to be named.
