Brenneman turns into horror Story for Rick

Rick Story may well wish he had never asked to be part of the UFC Live card after everything went wrong for the welterweight, culminating in a shock defeat to Charlie Brenneman in Sunday's co-main event.

Story, a month after defeating Thiago Alves, had been lined up for a potential welterweight title eliminator against Nate Marquardt. However, things began to go wrong when Marquardt had to be replaced by Brenneman, a man who had also lost his opponent when TJ Grant withdrew.

Suddenly Story went from being the underdog facing a top drawer striker, to overwhelming favourite paired up with an awkward wrestler. The result was a shock unanimous 29-28 decision victory that completely derails his charge through the 170lb division.

Very few times did Story have chance to threaten anything. Brenneman used an overhand right to set up multiple takedowns, spending dominating parts of each round on top of his foe, advancing position often enough to make up for the fact he was inflicting little damage.

This was one of the first times Story had been seen on his back, and all he really had for two rounds was a guillotine attempt that was never likely to work. The Brave Legion fighter threatened with a triangle choke and then mounted a tiring Brenneman in the third, but the finish he needed never arrived as Brenneman shook up the welterweight division.

Matt Mitrione now holds an undefeated 5-0 record in the heavyweight division after an impressive knockout victory over Christian Morecraft. Mitrione needed little over a minute to drop Morecraft for the first time with a straight left, the southpaw staying incredibly calm as he refused the opportunity of chasing the finish.

Mitrione's chin was a little too high as Morecraft found his target on occasions, but he again dropped his rival with a big right in the dying embers of the first round. Then, with half a minute left in the second, he fired off a right hook/straight left combo - walking away confidently without issuing any punches to a grounded Morecraft as the fight came to a spectacular end.

England's Curt Warburton never began to cope with a tough assignment in Joe Lauzon, who won inside two minutes via kimura. Lauzon lets his hands go to rock Warburton early, before he snapped on the fight-ending kimura, moving from mount to triangle control to twist the Brit into submission. The American took home the Submission of the Night cheque as result.

Fight of the Night went to Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz, although fans were denied the full three rounds by a dreadful refereeing call as Oliveira eventually 'won' by rear naked choke in round two. The opening five minutes saw both men landing a whole catalogue of strikes, while on the mat they traded guillotines and put on an exhibition of transitions in one of the best rounds of the year.

The second stanza threatened more of the same, but during a scramble Oliveira landed a blatantly illegal knee, not spotted by the ref, allowing the Brazilian to choke out a winded Lentz.

Elsewhere, Matt Brown gets another life in the UFC after he ended a three-fight losing streak with a dour unanimous 29-28 decision victory over John Howard.

And there were contrasting featherweight debuts for Joe Stevenson and Tyson Griffin. Stevenson dropped a decision to Javier Vasquez, while Griffin controlled Manvel Gamburyan.
