Nico Rosberg is "very confident" he can take the fight to the Red Bulls at this weekend's US Grand Prix but admits it is going to be tough.

Rosberg has finished on the podium at the last two races and was third fastest behind the Red Bulls during Friday practice in Austin, but still had a gap of 0.480s to Sebastian Vettel's best time. Asked if he was confident if he could beat Vettel this weekend, he said: "Very confident, but it's going to be tough."

He added: "It's just about trying to annoy the Red Bulls. We have two more shots at it, here and Brazil, and I've been annoying one of them [Mark Webber] for quite some time now. Maybe I can get the other one with a bit of luck."

Rosberg said tyre degradation was low but it was also difficult to get the maximum performance from the Pirelli rubber.

"The tyres don't really work. It's very cold out there and the tyres are very hard and the combination makes it so they don't really stick properly. The asphalt is also very smooth here, so each individual little rock doesn't have any sharp edges, and that has a big impact on our tyres and on our car. It makes it quite difficult and quite slippery."
