Felipe Massa was at a loss to explain his disappointing pace during qualifying at the United States Grand Prix.

Massa could only manage the 15th fastest time, but will start the race at least one place higher on the grid due to a penalty for Jenson Button in 13th. His Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso qualified sixth, but Massa said he had not been on the pace all weekend.

"I don't know what's happened," he said. "I'm also very surprised and have been struggling to get the grip on the car since yesterday. I didn't find any improvement or direction, so I have no idea what's going on. We need to find the problem and find out what's going on. It's a track I enjoy and I was quick here last year, but something is not working and I don't understand why."

Asked if his car was running in the same specification as Alonso's, he said: "It's the same, the same downforce, the same wings, the same everything."
