Grosjean surprised he could take fight to Red Bull
Romain Grosjean never expected to be able to fight the Red Bulls at the United States Grand Prix and said his race to second was among the best of his season.
Grosjean started from third but was able to move up to second in the first corner and then pull away from the cars behind. He never looked like beating race winner Sebastian Vettel but did absorb a lot of pressure from the second Red Bull of Mark Webber behind him in third.
"The best we had from our pre-race strategy was finishing third on my own and at the end I was second between the Red Bulls," he said. "We knew the start would be crucial and then the drive would need to be 100% without making any mistakes. It was probably one of my best drives of the year."
Grosjean said keeping confidence in himself after a tricky season last year was the key to his recent success, which has resulted in four podiums from the last five races.
"I never lost the confidence and if not I would have collapsed a long time ago," he said. "It's just a question of getting the right decision at the right time and being able to do more things and just be better in all areas. Stepping up to Formula One is not an easy time and you need time to get used to it and I took a little bit longer than other drivers. But I was delivering very good performances so I think that's why I'm here today."
