Williams says it has not been officially notified about the legal action filed by NASCAR team Michael Waltrip Racing after it was reported at the weekend that MWR is suing the Grove-based team over the hiring of Mike Coughlan.

Coughlan joined Williams as chief engineer after leaving his MWR role as director of vehicle design. But MWR says Williams negotiated and hired Coughlan while he was already under contract with the North Carolina-based outfit.

"Williams F1 is aware of reports that a lawsuit has been filed by Michael Waltrip Racing against the team and Mike Coughlan," commented a Williams team spokesman. "Neither Mike nor the team have received notice of any proceedings, or indeed have had any contact with Michael Waltrip Racing since early June. Consequently we have no further comment to make on this matter."

The suit reportedly alleges his move 'harmed the performance of the MWR teams as well as their viability in competing for sponsorship', and seeks damages in excess of $75,000 and other compensation.
