Raikkonen 'unlucky' with early contact
Kimi Raikkonen said he was "very unlucky" to retire from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on the opening lap.
Starting from the back of the grid, Raikkonen sustained damage to his right front wheel at the first corner after touching Giedo van der Garde and was forced to stop the car at Turn 2. It was his first opening-lap retirement since being involved in a collision in the 2006 United States Grand Prix and Raikkonen felt it was poor luck that the damage turned out to be terminal.
"I don't know [what happened] really," Raikkonen said. "I was on the inside and then somehow I managed to touch somewhere with the Caterham. We didn't touch very hard but I think the angle was very unlucky and it broke the steering, so…"
Raikkonen swiftly left the track after his retirement, having only arrived on Friday morning following a dispute with Lotus over pay.
