Renault extended their winning run at the start of the season to three in the heat of Bahrain, with Fernando Alonso grabbing a second win to jump to the top of the the World Championship table. With it he secured Renault's 20th win in its history.
The Spaniard started from pole position and led to turn one with Michael Schumacher chopping across the front of Jarno Trulli's Toyota to take second in his Ferrari. The Ferrari got within a second of the leader, Alonso never being able to stretch the gap before the first round of pit stops.
For Ferrari, this was a crucial race. The team started the season with an updated 2004 car but this race marked the debut of the 2005 car. It was bang on the money and Schumacher was a real threat for a win until the car's hydraulics failed.
That promoted Trulli back to second with Kimi Raikkonen taking third for McLaren. Ralf Schumacher added to the upbeat mood for Toyota by taking fourth while Pedro de la Rosa was fifth in the second McLaren. The Spaniard, standing in for Juan Pablo Montoya who had injured himself playing tennis (he said....) also took the race's fastest lap, the first of his F1 career.
To help Peter Sauber's eponymous team celebrate its 200th Grand Prix, the promising Felipe Massa took two points in seventh place.
