Only Khan can beat Floyd - Haye

Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye believes that Amir Khan - not Manny Pacquiao - is the only man who can snap Floyd Mayweather Jnr's unbeaten record.

Mayweather, the WBC welterweight champion, is reportedly in negotiations with Pacquiao over a May 5 clash in Las Vegas, the winner of which would be declared the planet's undisputed pound-for-pound champion.

But Khan, who trains in the same gym as Pacquiao, has also expressed an interest in facing Mayweather when he moves up to welterweight next year - and Haye can see the 25-year-old Brit shocking the world if he gets his wish.

"The only way Khan could be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world is by beating Mayweather," Haye told the Sun. "And I believe the only guy that can beat Mayweather is Khan. He's young and fresh so, if anyone has the physical tools, it's him."

Conflicting reports continue to emanate from both of the camps involved in the Mayweather v Pacquiao negotiations. The Filipino said recently that a deal was nearly done, while his promoter Bob Arum, who was thought to be a stumbling block, insisted he wants the fight to happen.

However, Oscar De La Hoya, who usually has a say in Mayweather's bouts, has thrown a cloak of mystery over the whole process by suggesting negotiations are in their infancy - if they have begun at all. "If we can't make the Manny Pacquiao v Mayweather fight, then we will gladly put Amir in with Floyd," De La Hoya said.

"Do I believe Amir is ready for Floyd? He is ready for anybody. Unless Pacquiao can get his promoter Bob Arum to the table very soon after Saturday night, then let's go for Mayweather v Khan in May."
