Mustafa Ameen, the 'mystery man' at ringside on the night of Amir Khan's loss to Lamont Peterson, has explained the reason why he was interfering with one of the scorecards.

Ameen's presence on December 10 has been the cause of much controversy, prompting a complaint from the Khan camp who questioned his interaction with the night's officials. An altered scorecard, in addition to a delay before announcing the result, all contributed to a general feeling of wrongdoing from the Khan camp.

The WBA has since ordered a rematch between Khan and Peterson, which means Peterson will have to vacate his belt in order avoid the Brit.

Ameen has now explained that there was nothing secretive about his actions at ringside, where replays showed him clearly pointing at WBA supervisor Michael Welsh's scorecard. Ameen insists his only intention was to point out a mathematical error.

"I noticed one error and a subsequent error. I assisted him in correcting it without touching anything," Ameen told BBC Sport. "I happened to look down, I believe at the end of the third round, I looked down and I saw Mr Welsh's score.

"I saw, I believe, it could have been nine, nine and nine - which is 27 all day long. There was an error. It might have been 26 or 28 but he was off by a point or two.

"I happened to look down and I said, 'Michael, nine times three is 27'. He said, 'Oh my God' and corrected himself. And he said, 'I'm not feeling well this evening, thank you very much'."
