Lewis Hamilton says he will go into Saturday still searching for a perfect lap after struggling to hook one together during Friday practice in Interlagos.

Hamilton finished behind Nico Rosberg in both sessions, running wide during his qualifying simulation and crossing the line two tenths shy of his team-mate on his quickest run. The FP2 times suggest qualifying will be between the title-chasing Mercedes drivers, who have taken pole in all but one of the 17 races so far this year.

When asked if he managed to hook a lap together on Friday, Hamilton said: "I didn't, no. But that's not a big issue, it's practice so that's what you go out there to try and do. There were quite a few red flags at the end so we didn't get much long running, but that's the same for everyone.

"The car generally feels OK. There's some improvements we can make for sure. It wasn't the best of days, I didn't really put together a really good lap but that's to come tomorrow hopefully."

FP2 was a stop-start session with three red flags limiting teams on their longer runs, but Hamilton says he was more focused on other areas.

"It is [tough], particularly for the long runs, but it's not a big issue today. Today is really just about trying to understand the car, trying to find out where your balance is and we've been moving that around."

The new surface at Interlagos was a source of intrigue coming into the first day of practice but Hamilton does not think it has taken too much away from the circuit's traditional feel.

"It's great, it's nice and smooth - it feels really nice. The grip is good; the characteristics of the circuit today were difficult because of the temperature, but otherwise it's good. It's still the same bumpiness as before, it's never really been that bad."
