Sebastian Vettel says Red Bull expected to be stronger than McLaren in Brazil but thinks the team cannot be disappointed with his fifth position.

Vettel finished three seconds off McLaren's Jenson Button but never came close to challenging the 2009 world champion.

"At the beginning of the race we were hoping we would be a little stronger against the McLarens but they seemed very competitive today and if anything I think we were a match," Vettel said. "We were hoping for maybe one more position but fifth is a good result."

Vettel lost out to Kevin Magnussen and Fernando Alonso on the first lap of the race at Descida do Lago, which he says reminded him of his clash with Bruno Senna which nearly cost him the 2012 world title.

"I had a good launch, then I had nowhere to go in Turn 1, then at at Turn 4 I don't have the best memories from two years away. I didn't know how aggressive Kevin might be and left a little bit too much space. I lost the car going a little bit wide and lost two positions because I couldn't go on the power out of the corner so I lost some momentum. I obviously had to fight hard to get the positions back throughout the race."
