Sebastian Vettel is confident he can be competitive come rain or shine at Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

Vettel took pole position in changing conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, setting his best time on his first attempt in Q3 before rain hit the final sector at the end of the session and ruled out any quicker laps. Vettel said the conditions had made it a difficult session, but is confident he can be competitive whatever the weather on Sunday.

"As we saw today, it was really tricky in some places and then drier than expected in other places, and then the next lap would be entirely different," he said. "It is difficult to foresee how the weather will be tomorrow, but the forecast looks a little bit friendlier than today. The last thing I heard was dry conditions, but it doesn't really matter. We have a couple of wet tyres left and lots of slicks. I think it could be an interesting race with mixed conditions and there is a lot of things that can happen."

Vettel said it had been hard to judge the conditions from lap to lap but at the end of the session rain at the final stopped anybody challenging his time.

"It was very tricky because you never knew what the conditions were like each time you were out. So it was intermediate tyres throughout, but it was extremely tricky to adapt, especially in the last qualifying session when we decided to have two runs. We thought the second run would be quicker because we had a new set of tyres left but it started to drizzle in the last sector and in the last chicane and I went straight on one lap and on the second lap I had a mistake somewhere else. So it turned out the conditions were best for the first run, so that was a bit of a surprise and obviously you target on new tyres to push a little bit harder.

"But I was very happy that the first lap was good enough even though it was very tight with Lewis. I think in the end everybody was improving in the first two sectors but in the last one just didn't allow anyone to go any quicker. Surely, I didn't mind but I think it showed how difficult the whole of qualifying was for everyone."
