Daniel Ricciardo was left frustrated after missing out on third place on the grid by less than 0.05s during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix as he was forced to settle for sixth.

Ricciardo was just 0.041s off team-mate Sebastian Vettel in third, with the two split by the Williamses of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

"I was a bit frustrated," he said. "When you are less than half a tenth from three places up the grid then it's frustrating no matter what. I've calmed down now and obviously it's done and I'll just look to the race."

He said his final hot lap was not entirely clean after struggling to get his super-soft tyres up to temperature on his out lap.

"It was scrappy. I lost quite a chunk in the second sector and I think here we have struggled because the super-soft has been a lot harder to turn on this year. Particularly around here we needed a quick out lap and we needed to let a couple of guys through and there were a couple of guys in front as well, so it wasn't a quick enough out lap and tried to fight the car a bit too much."

Ricciardo said the start would be tough with Renault's power deficit to the Mercedes engines around him on the grid, but is hoping to hold station and then build from there.

"We know there are cars around us that have quicker straight-line speed, but once we have got through the first couple of turns we have to put our foot down and really try and try to catch someone's tow. It's going to be an interesting first few laps. Once the field spreads out it will be a bit more easy going, but those first few laps well be crucial in terms of what we do and whether we gain a couple or lose a handful [of places]."
