Bath face an anxious wait over the fitness of fly-half Butch James after he reported back from Tri-Nations duty with South Africa nursing a shoulder injury.

The World Cup-winner was injured in the Springboks' victory over Australia at Loftus Versfeld on August 28, with Bath boss Steve Meehan revealing that he would undergo Tests in order to clarify the nature of the problem. James has previously struggled with the same shoulder, missing 10 weeks of action in 2008 due to injury.

In James' absence, new signing Sam Vesty began the season in the Bath No.10 jersey and starred as they beat Leeds 32-16 in the opening round of the Premiership.

"Now that Butch has returned he will see a specialist in Bath on Thursday and one in London on Monday," Meehan told The Bath Chronicle. "The guy in London is a surgeon who has dealt with him in the past. That will be the best indicator. Once he gets down there we will have a better idea of where he sits.

"I suppose it's always the initial fear whenever someone goes down on the paddock or at any stage. But we have a pretty strong squad in the inside backs and can be pretty confident that we'd be able to handle his absence for whatever period of time."
