Race

14:02: The cars return to the grid. Hamilton will be hoping the cars line up behind him nice and quickly so his car doesn't get too hot...

14:00: The cars head off on the formation lap. All 22 make it away from the grid, but they are looking very hot out there under the Spanish sun with heat haze making the cars at the back look like something out of a Salvador Dali painting.

13:59: Outside the top ten all the soft tyres are new apart from Kvyat and Ericsson who have used softs. However, that's just three of laps on those -- the same as the top ten.

13:58: Our data shows softs for the entire field apart from Haryanto, who is on mediums in 22nd place on the grid.

13:57: All of the top ten will start on the soft tyres they used in Q2, we're just waiting for the tyre blankets to come off behind to see what the rest will start on. Hards are expected to be unloved here, but Sainz did an impressive long run on Friday using them which might make them an option if a safety car mixes things up.

13:55: Other drivers to keep an eye on as they attempt to carve through the field are Vettel from sixth place, Kvyat from 13th and Massa who starts 18th after Williams got its qualifying strategy all wrong yesterday.

13:53: Alonso tells Sky that he expects high degradation today and the need to manage the tyres. That sounds an awful lot like he is going to try a two-stop strategy from 10th on the grid.

13:51: Mercedes confirm that Rosberg had to change a hydraulic pack in Parc Ferme. No major drama and it was replaced with an identical unit so no grid demotion either.

13:48: The run down to the first corner is a long one, so poor getaways are often penalised. The first three corners tend to sort the men from the boys -- who could forget Alonso's move around the outside in 2013

13:46: There's a klaxon that sounds about now to tell all the media types and hangers on to leave the grid. Then we have the national anthem before the real business of motor racing gets underway.

13:45:The grid is now full. It looks like there are no issues on any of the cars ... fingers crossed.

13:41: Lots of important names in the paddock for the start of the European season in Spain. Dr Zetsche -- boss of Daimler and ultimate boss at Mercedes --, Sergio Marchione -- Ferrari CEO and Chairman -- and fizzy drinks baron Dietrich Mateschitz are all present. No pressure on the drivers then...

13:39: Pirelli says a three-stop is the quickest way to the flag, but you have to be careful not to get stuck in traffic. Managing degradation is key to this afternoon's race.

13:37: It's very hot out there, track temperatures up at 40C and only a few clouds in the distance over the nearby mountains.

13:35: This is also a crucial moment for preparing for the start. The drivers complete practice starts at the end of the pit lane, but the clutch settings are locked in from the moment they leave the garage. It's up to the driver to make the most of that now by feeding in the clutch with with single paddle and getting the throttle position right.

13:31: The pit lane has gone green and the drivers are heading out for a few sighter laps. They have the freedom to complete as many laps as they want until the pit lane closes at 13:45, by which time they must be on the grid. They are also allowed to use different tyres to the ones they will start the race on, which, for the top ten, must by the tyres they used in Q2.

13:30 Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix. We're looking forward to a straight fight between the two Mercedes this afternoon, not to mention a good scrap between the Red Bulls and Ferraris.

Lap 1

Rosberg goes around the outside of Hamilton into Turn1. A fantastic move!

But Hamilton and Rosberg come together at Turn 4 and both are out of the race!

Hamilton had a much better exit at Turn 3, Rosberg moved across on him hard and came across on him and put him on the grass. That's when the two made contact and both are out of the race after a lot of damage.

Hamilton was on the grass on the inside and lost control as he clattered into Rosberg!

Lap 2

Safety car out.

I would say that is a racing incident. Rosberg moved across harshly, but I don't think he was aware how quickly Hamilton was closing on him. Hamilton had much better start.

Hamilton and Rosberg are both okay, we should add. And Ricciardo leads from Verstappen and Sainz!

Lap 3

Safety car in this lap.

Ricciardo warms his tyres as he gets ready to race and keep Verstappen behind him.

Lap 4

Good restart by Ricciardo, who leads Verstappen down the pit straight. Sainz is under pressure from Vettel but holds him off into Turn 1.

Raikkonen is on the back of his teammate's car, ready to pounce if Vettel makes a mistake behind Sainz.

Kvyat attempts a move on Grosjean for tenth at Turn 10 but can't make it stick

Lap 5

Button up to eighth ahead of Alonso amid all that carnage on lap one.

Lap 6

Ricciardo sets the fastest lap with a gap of 1.5s over Verstappen.

Sainz is still holding off Vettel and DRS should be activated this lap.

Hamilton returns to the paddock with his helmet still on. Big discussions ahead at Mercedes. This will be fascinating for title fight.

Lap 7

Sainz now comes under pressure from Vettel with DRS, but holds him off as the Ferrari attempts to go around the outside.

Vettel is pushing hard but Sainz is doing a very good job with that 2015 Ferrari power unit in the back of the Toro Rosso.

Lap 8

Vettel manages to get past Sainz at Turn 1. The Toro Rosso did not make it easy as the Ferrari swung to the inside, but Vettel made it stick and will now chase down the Red Bulls in clean air.

Kvyat told to hand back two positions after overtaking under the safety car, he drops back to 13th.

Lap 9

Raikkonen attacks Sainz on the outside, but the Toro Rosso forces him into the run off. Hard but fair I would say. Raikkonen filters back in behind Sainz as he rejoins, but Bottas is now on his tail.

Vettel is now 4.5s off Ricciardo at the front.

Lap 10

Perez pits.

Raikkonen makes the move stick on this lap after taking to the inside of the Toro Rosso at Turn1. That's the more sensible way to do it, but Raikkonen is now 4.2s down on teammate Vettel.

Lap 11

Ricciardo has a gap of 1.6s over Verstappen. Vettel has closed the gap to Verstappen to 3.2s.

Sainz pitted allowing Bottas up to fifth and Alonso up to sixth.

Lap 12

Ricciardo pits for mediums with a 2.5s stop. Verstappen takes the lead but is likely to pit on the next lap.

Ricciardo comes out in some clean air behind Grosjean.

Meanwhile, the two Mercedes drivers have been summoned to the Mercedes engineering offices.

Lap 13

Verstappen, Raikkonen and Bottas pit on this lap.

Vettel leads from Grosjean, but neither have pitted yet.

Ricciardo is already on the back of the Haas and needs to clear it quickly so as not to hamper his race pace.

Lap 14

Ricciardo passes Grosjean for second place at Turn 1. The Haas driver sensibly does not put up much of a fight.

Wolff and Lowe join the Mercedes drivers in the engineering room now.

All the drivers have taken on medium tyres at their first pit stop so far.

Lap 15

Vettel continues to lead by 16s from Ricciardo. So it looks like Ferrari is going for a different strategy here.

Raikkonen has matched the Red Bull approach, but it may be that Vettel is attempting a two-stop versus a three-stop. Getting through traffic will be crucial for the Red Bull drivers and Verstappen has passed Grosjean into Turn 1 for third.

Lap 16

Vettel pits at the front to allow the Red Bulls to lead again.

Vettel takes on the mediums too and is still ahead of Raikkonen. He has tyres four laps younger than Ricciardo and three laps younger than Verstappen. This race is on!

Vettel is only 2.4s off Verstappen after those stops. and Verstappen has a 2.3s gap to his teammate Ricciardo in the lead.

Lap 17

Vettel sets another personal best as he continues to close the gap.

Lauda has also joined the fun up in the Mercedes engineering offices. This could get interesting, what we would give to be a fly on the wall.

Lap 18

Verstappen and Vettel are closing on Ricciardo now. Vettel has set the fastest lap of the race and got the gap down to 1.4s to Verstappen.

Raikkonen is falling off the pace somewhat, 4.2s off his team-mate.

Lap 19

Ricciardo sets 1:30.5, Verstappen a 1:30.4 and Vettel a 1:30.2 on that last lap. It's closing up at the front with at least one stop (probably two) remaining.

Vettel has the gap down to 1.0s now to Verstappen. He'll be reaching for the DRS button on the pit straight

Lap 20

Not quite close enough this time, Vettel is just over a second off Verstappen in the DRS detection zone. Next lap maybe.

Vettel dipped into the 1:29s on that last lap.

Lap 21

Verstappen is 1.5s off Ricciardo now as Vettel still remains just out of DRS range of Verstappen.

But this is a thrilling battle shaping up at the front. Any three of these drivers could win here.

Lap 22

Vettel has now dropped off slightly and is 1.2s off Verstappen.

Hulkenberg's car has caught fire. He's told to pull over by a fire marshal. Perez had a fire on his car on Friday, maybe that new tight engine cover is a bit too tight.

Lap 23

Yellow flags while they clear that Force India in sector three.

Vettel remains 1.2s off Verstappen as Raikkonen now starts to close in, with the gap to his teammate down to 3.7s. Ferrari may well be biding its time ahead of the next pit stops knowing that an on-track overtaking move won't be easy.

Lap 24

Ricciardo continues to keep his gap at a second over Verstappen but is now coming up behind the first of the traffic in Haryanto's Manor.

That could close things up nicely.

Lap 25

Verstappen is now in DRS range of Ricciardo, who remains behind the Manor which has just pitted and is on fresh tyres.

Verstappen is right on the tail of Ricciardo now, who will be urging that Manor to get out the way. The dirty air is damaging his speed in the fast corners.

Lap 26

Finally Haryanto gets out the way on the pit straight and Ricciardo slipstreams him to get every last ounce of speed out of his Red Bull TAG-Heuer package.

Ricciardo increases the gap to Verstappen back up to one second.

Lap 27

Vettel now 1.3s off Verstappen, who is keeping a watching brief at the moment.

Verstappen is still pushing, but the question is how much he will damage his tyres behind his teammate. Vettel may be playing the long game here.

Lap 28

No DRS on the start of this lap for either Verstappen or Vettel as the gaps stabilise again.

Raikkonen has closed to within 2.9s of his team-mate. Maybe he is playing an even longer game?

Lap 29

Ricciardo pits from the lead for soft tyres. A stop of 2.9s, he's on a three-stopper without any doubt.

Verstappen is on 16-lap old mediums, Vettel is on 13-lap old mediums. Vettel can go longer but I'm not sure it will help.

Lap 30

Vettel pits this lap to try to undercut Verstappen. Not a great stop at 3.5s.

Vettel just comes out ahead of Bottas and will be able to hold the Williams off. Any slower in the pits and that would have been very costly. So Vettel also on a three-stop despite that long first stint.

Vettel is shifting now as Verstappen stays out for another lap. Will Red Bull attempt to shift Verstappen on to a two-stop. If he's three stopping I would speculate he has already lost a position to Vettel in the stops.

Lap 31

Raikkonen is also staying out in the second Ferrari. He is 3.6s down the road from Verstappen.

Ricciardo is reacting now with the fastest lap of the race and the first driver in the 1:28s.

Lap 32

Ricciardo is 3.4s ahead of Vettel and 11.8s off Raikkonen in second. Ricciardo is hungry for this win and I would say is still in the best position to do so. Vettel will give him a run for his money, but will have to pass him on track, I would say.

Both Ricciardo and Vettel have gone for soft tyres. Ricciardo's are six laps old when you add the three laps they did in qualifying, Vettel's are five laps old.

Lap 33

Verstappen continues to lead but Raikkonen is now closing in. The gap is down to 2.5s now.

Vettel is closing on Ricciardo too. He has the gap down to 2.6s.

Lap 34

Raikkonen now closes the gap to 1.8s to Verstappen. Has he finally woken up. Those slowish laps at the start of his stint are now looking rather smart while Verstappen was trying to put pressure on his teammate for the lead.

Lap 35

Verstappen pits

Gutierrez meanwhile pulls a great move on Grosjean with a bit of contact at Turn 4 to take 11th place.

Verstappen takes on a fresh set of mediums and comes out behind some backmarkers. He needs those mediums to last 31 laps to make this two-stop work.

Lap 36

Raikkonen pits from the lead and also takes on new mediums. His last set did 23 laps, these need to do 30, albeit on lower fuel.

So Ricciardo takes the lead with Vettel 1.2s behind in second and Verstappen 11 seconds off Vettel in third. Verstappen will see that gap increase if he is on a two-stop, but needs to keep it lower than about 25 seconds if he is going to get back ahead of Vettel when the Ferrari next pits.

Lap 37

The Ferrari crew went out in the pit lane with tyres ready on that last lap, but that seemed like a bluff.

Grosjean goes off at Turn 7 and takes the gravelly line through Turn 8. Things going from bad to worse there.

Lap 38

Now Vettel pits. That will be to try an aggressive undercut on Red Bull, but he comes out well behind teammate Raikkonen in fourth. Odd decision.

If Raikkonen and Verstappen are on two-stops, Vettel is going to have to make the move on the track. Very odd decision from Ferrari there.

Lap 39

Ricciardo, on 13 lap old softs, leads Verstappen by 11.7s on four lap old mediums, ahead of Raikkonen by 2.3s on 3 lap old mediums and Vettel on 1 lap old mediums 5.8s behind his teammate.

Maybe Ferrari saw a slow puncture on Vettel's car. That is the only reason I can see for pitting the Ferrari so early. Or they know that Verstappen and Raikkonen will eventually pit again.

Lap 40

Vettel sets a new fastest lap, that was over a second quicker than Ricciardo and Verstappen at the front. He is pushing hard now.

Ricciardo's lead is now coming down, with Verstappen closing the gap to 9.5s. If Ricciardo pits again he will come out behind Vettel and if Verstappen can stay out until the end of the race he could win! Big ask for those mediums tyres though.

Lap 41

Ricciardo's soft tyres are now 15 laps old and he is over a second slower than his team-mate. His strategy is now working out anymore. Maybe that Ferrari decision to pit Vettel will be crucial. But if Ricciardo does pit soon he will have fresher tyres on which to attack at the end of the race.

Lap 42

8.0s is now the gap at the front between the Red Bulls. Raikkonen is 1.6s off Verstappen. This race is still very much on. Any of the top four could win depending on how long the tyres last.

Lap 43

The Mercedes drivers will report to the stewards at 16:30 local time. We won't hear from either of them before then.

Ricciardo is staying out again but only has a gap of 5.5s over Verstappen. This race appears to be going away from him.

Lap 44

Ricciardo now pits. He lost a lot of time on the old softs. He now has fresh mediums but rejoins 8.5s behind Vettel! If all the top four can stay out until the end this has gone horribly wrong for Ricciardo.

Ricciardo's tyres are 6 laps younger than Vettel's, seven laps younger than Raikkonen's and nine laps younger than Verstappen's.

Lap 45

Verstappen's lead over Raikkonen is now just over a second. Ferrari is turning up the pressure on Verstappen. His tyres are one lap younger, so it will have to be a car/driver advantage to make the move stick on the Red Bull.

Vettel is 6.8s off Raikkonen.

Lap 46

Now Ricciardo is on the move and already has the gap down to 6.0s to Vettel.

Plenty of traffic for the lead cars to negotiate too. 20 laps left for these tyres to last. He needs 32 laps out of his mediums, which are now 11 laps old.

Lap 47

So the big question now is how good are Verstappen and Raikkonen at managing tyres?

Fernando Alonso retires with "no power" in his McLaren. He throws his gloves on the ground. Not happy after a fairly competitive weekend so far for the team. The car just ground to a halt.

Lap 48

Raikkonen is now 0.9s off Verstappen. Can the 18-year-old manage the pressure here and can he manage his tyres? What a thrilling end to the race we have here!

Vettel is now 7.6s off Raikkonen and has Ricciardo just 3.3s off behind.

Lap 49

Raikkonen in DRS zone, but that TAG-Heuer branded Renault is pulling Verstappen along nicely and the Ferrari doesn't get a sniff at Turn 1. Raikkonen is now 0.6s off the Red Bull.

Vettel's pace has really dropped off. If he's having to manage his tyres you would say that Verstappen and Raikkonen on four lap older tyres don't stand a chance.

Lap 50

Raikkonen is still too far off on the run down to Turn 1 to attempt a move. Vestappen looks unflustered as the Ferrari moves around a bit on its tyres behind him. Running in dirty air won't be doing Raikkonen's chances of making the end of the race any easier.

Lap 51

Raikkonen is only able to get the gap down to 0.5s with the use of DRS. Vettel is 8.3s off his teammate with Ricciardo 1.8s behind.

Sergio Marchionne is watching intently.

Verstappen locks up in Turn 10 and Raikkonen is all over the back of the Red Bull now...

Lap 52

But the Red Bull's speed in sector three is allowing Verstappen to keep a decent gap every time they arrive at Turn 1.

Ricciardo now has the gap to Vettel down to 1.4s.

Raikkonen just can't get close enough in the final corner where the dirty air of the car in front really hurts the following car.

Lap 53

Raikkonen still can't get close enough to even have a look at the Red Bull at Turn 1. This will all be hurting Raikkonen's tyres, so every lap Verstappen keeps him behind is another lap closer to winning ... assuming they are able to pull off the two-stop.

Lap 54

Vettel is 7.1s off Raikkonen now. The three-stop really doesn't look like it paid off for Ricciardo and Vettel, but we still have 12 laps left in this race.

Raikkonen is closer on this lap, but not close enough. One snatched brake and it could change everything for Verstappen, but so far the 18-year-old is keeping his cool.

Lap 55

Raikkonen once again is too far off Verstappen. Vettel closes the gap to 6.0s but has serious pressure from Ricciardo now, who is within a second of the Ferrari.

Remember Ricciardo has a six lap advantage over Vettel on these tyres.

Lap 56

Raikkonen is the closest he has been yet, but still thinks twice before throwing a move up the inside.

Ricciardo has a look at Vettel but is not close enough. Kvyat, funnily enough, a lap down on Ricciardo is now on his tail! Teammates one race ago but now Kvyat could make things very awkward as his Toro Rosso on these tyres is actually quicker!

Lap 57

Raikkonen remains too far off Verstappen.

Ricciardo has another look at Vettel but can't make it stick. Kvyat is now keeping a watching brief.

Kimi is right on the tail of Verstappen in Turn 10. Vettel now has the gap down to 4.7s to his teammate. This is getting very interesting.

Lap 58

Raikkonen is too far off again with eighth laps remaining. Vettel and Ricciardo continue to close in. But we have seen already how difficult it is for drivers to pass here. Could the 23 and 22 lap old Pirellis on Verstappen and Raikkonen have the final say in this race?

Lap 59

Ricciardo is all over the back of Vettel. He has that final sector advantage over the Ferrari so has more chance of being close enough to try a move.

Ricciardo tries a move up the inside, runs wide, but Vettel retakes the position as the Red Bull scrambles back onto the racing line.

Vettel: "If I don't avoid that he is going to go into my car! What are we doing here, racing or ping pong?"

Lap 60

I would say Ricciardo was entitled to have a go at Turn 1. He just overcooked it slightly and that meant he ran deep and Vettel could take the position back. Great racing as far as I'm concerned. Vettel should stop moaning.

Raikkonen, meanwhile, remains within a second but not close enough to pass Verstappen.

Lap 61

Ricciardo tries again into Turn 1, but Vettel doesn't change his line and Ricciardo has to lock his right front to try to get his car stopped. A collision is avoided and the Red Bull remains behind the Ferrari.

Vettel now has a gap of 4.2s to Raikkonen.

Lap 62

Raikkonen remains too far off Verstappen as they approach Turn 1. He got a little closer with the help of Gutierrez at the end of the previous lap but it wasn't enough to make it stick at Turn 1.

In the middle of the battle for the lead and third, Button passes Gutierrez for ninth.

Lap 63

Vettel ran wide ahead of the final corner on that last lap, but Ricciardo couldn't take advantage.

Kvyat now passes Gutierrez for tenth place as he follows the Vettel/Ricciardo battle past the Haas.

Lap 64

Verstappen starts lap 64 of 66 on 29 lap old tyres.

Ricciardo has another look at Vettel and has another lock up, but it's not enough to get past the Ferrari.

Raikkonen is now over a second off Verstappen. We could be about to see youngest winner in F1 history.

Lap 65

Two laps remain. Verstappen has a lead of 1.1s over Raikkonen, putting the Ferrari out of DRS range.

Ricciardo is also too far off Vettel now as Kvyat unlaps him to let the Toro Rosso loose.

Ricciardo has a left rear puncture!

Lap 66

Sensational stuff from Verstappen! A 32-lap stint on the mediums to win on his debut for Red Bull. What an amazing story here and that's before we even mention the fallout at Mercedes!

Ricciardo held on to fourth in the Red Bull after taking on a set of softs at the end. Bottas fifth ahead of Sainz, Perez, Massa, Button and Kvyat.

That's one of the best Spanish Grands Prix I can remember. A tense battle at the end there based around tyre strategy. Verstappen really deserved that!

Vettel and Ricciardo will both be asking questions of their strategists.

Kimi offers Verstappen a handshake and he gets a hug and a pat on the back from Vettel, the man he has taken the record of youngest driver from.

Thanks for joining us today. Full reaction from Red Bull, Ferrari and of course Mercedes will be coming your way. Make sure you keep checking back on the website this evening.

--------------------------------------------------------

Verstappen starts his final lap but Raikkonen has closed up, not sure it will be enough though.

Ricciardo pits for a new set.

Raikkonen has one last chance at Turn 10....

But the Ferrari is not close enough.

And Verstappen wins the Spanish Grand Prix to become the youngest driver ever to win an F1 race!
