Lewis Hamilton is now trying to beat Fernando Alonso in the drivers' standings after slipping 96 points behind championship-leader Sebastian Vettel at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Hamilton finished fifth in Singapore as Vettel went on to take his third win in a row ahead of Alonso in second. Hamilton is now 36 points behind Alonso and says the Ferrari driver is his new target with six races remaining.

"I'm nearly 100 points behind now so the championship has gone out the window," he said. "I'm just going to try to catch Fernando somehow, he's ahead by a few points, but we will try to beat Ferrari. We'll just ride the wave we're on because we are on a good wave in general for the team, much better than they had last year. I'm happy I can contribute and I'll just try to get the Ferraris."

Hamilton was disappointed with his pace in Singapore and thought he was higher placed when he crossed the line.

"I don't think we can be satisfied with this weekend," he added. "I thought we were further ahead. I didn't see my pit board and I wasn't told what position I was in, so when Mark [Webber] retired I thought we were progressing. So I'm disappointed with the result we got considering we were pushing and perhaps the strategy wasn't as good as we hoped. Nonetheless the guys did a great job and I hope we have a better chance at the next race."
