Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid, with the Argentina striker penning a five-year contract.

No fee was confirmed by either club, but it is thought City have paid Atletico Madrid around £39 million for Aguero, eclipsing their previous high of £32.5 million for Brazil forward Robinho in August 2008.

He becomes manager Roberto Mancini's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Arsenal defender Gael Clichy and Partizan Belgrade's Stefan Savic.

A statement on the Manchester City website read: ''Sergio Aguero has become Manchester City's latest signing after the terms of his five-year-contract were completed today.

''The 23-year-old Argentinian international striker has moved to the Blues from Atletico Madrid, and is likely to be in the squad for this weekend's Dublin Super Cup tournament. He will wear the No. 16 shirt.''

Meanwhile, Argentina great Ossie Ardiles believes Aguero will be a ''wonderful'' addition to the club.

''He is quick, he is sharp and clever,'' Ardiles told BBC Sport. ''He can play as a lone striker, he can play with another guy and can come back and create things. He is very sharp. You give him one yard and this is it, he is gone. His vision is to score goals. If he has a little chance the ball will be in the net.

''I have no doubt whatsoever that he will be wonderful in the Premier League.''
